i'm going to have to go against consensus and pick play sand as a better substate...
pool filter sand is undoubtedly much cleaner and easier to use with a very quick rinse, but IMHO play sand is much more realistic looking. it also consistently looks the same, whereas pool filter sand gets dirty. it's around the same price as pool filter sand...

pool filter sand is not as cheap as playsand,....but it is much easier to use and to work with IMO. 25 lbs for $11I got a 50# bag for $11 from a pool place. |

my vote's for pool filter sand, too-- MUCH easier to work with and MUCH cleaner from the get-go-- rinsing hardly even necessary!

I have some Geophagus surinamesis and am planning on doing a south american tank with them. I know they like sand but I'm wondering which sand would work better? Play sand or pool filter sand? Any opinions?
Thanks! |

I'm sure some joe's juice would work on mushrooms. Easier than injecting them.

Ya, I have no interest in trying to chisel and frag these things... Its not worth the time or the 2 bucks!
I've been using a small syringe and hitting them with vinegar, and ya it does work but once again its a real hassle. Guess i'll just zap a half dozen or so a day and see what happens. And as far as trading pound for pound, i have a feeling that will come back to bite me aswell since i'm sure i'll end up adding some kind of unwanted coral/crab/aiptasia, etc... |

what are you going to do with the goldfish after the cycle is completed? why don't you just do that now, and get some guppies... Good point. You're not keeping goldfish, so don't use them to cycle your tank... Maybe I might just do that hahaha! |

Yeah serge is right, any heater that fits will work just fine. Try to find one of equivalent wattage.
For a 6 gallon tank you don't want to get a heater thats too big, because should it malfunction at some point in the future, it will have the ability to cook the tank. |

http://www.firsttankguide.net/nogoldfish.php Like I said, if you're going to keep guppies, use guppies to cycle the tank. If you really want, skip your cycle completely. I can send you home with some seeded media. Just a suggestion |
